According to a new study by QR Code Generator, which analyzed flight cancellation data from August 2023 to July 2024, Frontier Airlines had the highest cancellation rate, with 2.22 percent of its scheduled flights being canceled. 

Endeavor Air and Mesa Airlines follow closely behind, ranking second and third with cancellation rates of 2.21 percent and 2.10 percent, respectively.

If you’re looking for the airlines that are the least likely to cancel your flight, you might want to book on regional carrier Piedmont Airlines, which canceled just 0.51 percent of flights. For a major carrier, Southwest Airlines had the best track record, canceling 0.81 percent of flights.

Sicily

Slow down and enjoy a taste of the Italian lifestyle with a surprisingly affordable Sicilian getaway. This island off the southern tip of Italy ranks eighth on Dollar Flight Club’s list of the cheapest destinations to fly to in 2025. Cruise into Catania or Palermo for only $500 roundtrip from East Coast airports or just $630 from the West Coast. Although the current exchange rate favors the euro, the difference it slight—the 1:1.05 (EU:USD)—with most reasonable daily expenses only impacted by a margin of $5 USD. Save even more by traveling during off season, late autumn through late winter, for cheaper rates on hotels and fewer crowds.

New Orleans

As affordable U.S. getaways go, New Orleans itself packs plenty of culture and value—as long as you avoid booking during the city’s big festivals like Mardi Gras and Jazz Fest. Flights to the Big Easy start at under $150 roundtrip from the East Coast, with fares from Boston and New York as low as $70 and $100 respectively. Flights from the West Coast are comparable, with fares from major airports like Los Angeles, Las Vegas, and Portland all between $100 and $170 roundtrip. If you are set on experiencing Mardi Gras in the city, budget carrier Spirit is adding four temporary routes to meet the demand of the 2025 season, departing from Columbus (OH), Indianapolis (IN), Memphis (TN), and San Antonio (TX).

China

China seems to be on everyone’s bucket list—as it should be—for its big wonders like the Great Wall and its smaller pleasures like Shanghai street food carts. Flights to China from the West Coast U.S. for around $750 aren’t uncommon, and booking with tour operators can lower the price of a lengthy stay even further, all while letting you get the lay of the land from a seasoned local guide. For example, G Adventures’s China Express Tour will ferry you from from Beijing to Shanghai over eight nights for just $1,199—covering lodging, transportation, and activities for roughly $150 per day. 

Costa Rica

Flights to San Jose, Costa Rica’s capital city, can be found for under $300 roundtrip departing from the East Coast U.S., with West Coast prices remaining below $400. San Jose is centrally located, making it the main starting point for travelers looking to visit iconic spots like Tortuguero National Park, Manuel Antonio National Park, and Arenal Volcano National Park. Flights to Costa Rica’s other international airport, Liberia, are available from both the East and West Coasts for under $400. This airport lands you in close proximity to Guanacaste Province, home to the laidback surf town of Tamarindo and black sand beach Playa Carbon.

With G Adventures’ Costa Rica Quest, adventure seekers can spend nine days in Costa Rica riding rapids, sampling coffee, and exploring the rainforest, all for an average of around $116 per night.

Iceland

After WOW Air faded from the scene in 2019, Iceland’s new budget carrier PLAY swooped in to fill the void by offering super affordable fares to Reykjavik. Flights to Iceland’s glaciers and hot springs on PLAY air are especially cheap, with prices as low as $70 one-way. While PLAY only operates out of East Coast airports, West Coasters wanting to get in on the deals can book with Icelandair, which offers fares as low as $430 roundtrip. While not as much of a steal as East Coast departures, even Icelandair’s higher fares like L.A. to Reykjavik for $460 round-trip are a deal considering the value. Saint Lucia

According to Skyscanner, flights to Saint Lucia’s capital city Castries fell by 25% over the past year. Flights are cheapest January through March of 2025, with one way fares from the East Coast U.S. as low as $127. While flights from the West Coast are more expensive, those with flexible dates can find fares as low as $200 one way. Saint Lucia is a relatively small island—travelers can drive from Vieux Fort at one end to Gros Islet at the other in under two hours. Savvy planners can easily fit in volcanic mud baths in Soufriere ($10 USD), a visit to Pigeon Island National Park ($10 USD), and a quick jaunt to the Pitons with plenty of time to spare to lounge on the island’s free public beaches.

Galapagos

Like many of the world’s most biodiverse places, the Galapagos archipelago islands are protected and allow only trained nature guides to take visitors to experience the wildlife. But seeing plant and animal species found nowhere else on Earth doesn’t have to cost a fortune, thanks to Ecuador’s official use of the U.S. dollar and on-sale tour offerings.

Intrepid Travel’s Galapagos Experience is just  $1,500 for a seven-day Galapagos itinerary including accommodations, transport, and nature activities including bird watching, snorkeling, a visit to a volcano, and more. South Africa

Our summer (i.e. the Southern Hemisphere’s winter) is the best time to indulge in a South African escape—and it’s probably more affordable than you’d think. Not only is the weather still mild in winter, but you’ll get a break from all the high-season summer flight prices of the Northern Hemisphere. It’ll still be an investment, but during summer you can easily find South Africa flights from East Coast cities like Boston for as low as $850 round-trip in July and August. In fact, South Africa also snagged a spot on Dollar Flight Club’s cheap flights list for the new year.

South Africa’s exchange rate is also now in Americans’ favor, with luxury hotel prices sitting around the average price of a standard hotel in the States. If a guide-led safari isn’t in your budget after airfare, don’t sweat it: Cape Town also has affordable arts and culture experiences like artisan shops and local wineries, and hiking spots like Table Mountain and Helderberg Nature Reserve.

Stay Hydrated (the Right Way)

On a long flight, the dry cabin air can quickly dehydrate you, even if you don’t feel thirsty, so staying hydrated is crucial. Watch What You Eat and Drink

If you tend to emerge from the plane with a terrible headache or feeling bloated, the culprit might be your in-flight meal. Ultra-processed airplane meals are often packed with salt, which can make dehydration worse and lead to headaches. Too much salt can also contribute to “jet bloat,” which combined with the change in cabin pressure, leaves you feeling uncomfortable and swollen.

Take a Tried and True Sleeping Remedy

31,000 feet in the air is not the time to test a new sleeping pill. However, if there’s a remedy that you’ve taken previously and know works well for you (like melatonin or magnesium), taking it during your flight can help you get some much-needed rest. Getting some shut eye is really the best way to feel better after a long journey.

Hate stepping off the plane with swollen legs and feet? Try wearing compression socks on your next flight. Swelling in the legs and feet is common during air travel due to a mix of inactivity, cabin pressure, and dehydration. She said that about five minutes into the flight, there was a “loud bang noise,” and she looked “to the side and [saw] the ceiling hanging down over two passengers. The flight attendants did not notice, and nobody rang the call buttons.” After a few minutes, the flight attendant took a picture and showed it to the pilot, who said it “wasn’t a big deal and they could keep going.” 

O’Malley said it looked like the little air vents fell, but there were “little plastic tubings that definitely looked like they might be part of the oxygen system, too,” hanging down. No announcement was made, and the crew “seemed to not really care.” O’Malley, however, was unsettled and anxious the whole flight. She was surprised they did not turn back to fix it and just took the chance that it “knocked out the emergency oxygen to those seats or that side of the plane.” 

Ceiling Panel Falls During Porter Airlines Flight

O’Malley stated she typically avoids Porter, as the plane interiors “leave a bit to be desired” and remind her of “an old school bus or public transit and are very cramped.” However, she finds Toronto International a tricky airport to navigate, so she chose instead to fly out of Billy Bishop in Toronto, connecting in Ottawa on Porter. She now will take her chances with Toronto International to avoid Porter Air at all costs. 

We contacted Porter Airlines about the incident and were told that the “overhead panel cover needed to be re-secured. This is a minor requirement and not safety-related, so the Captain chose not to make an announcement. When the aircraft landed, the panel was secured, and the aircraft returned to service.” 

What To Do When Part Of the Plane Breaks Mid-Flight

So, what should happen when parts of the plane appear to break mid-flight? We’ve created a step-by-step guide for what to do when something breaks on an airplane. 

1. Don’t Panic

This may seem easier said than done, but try not to panic and worry other passengers. Remain calm and inform those who need to know first, which brings us to number two. 

2. Tell A Flight Attendant

This may seem obvious, but apparently, it isn’t, as no one pressed the call button when part of the ceiling fell. However, flight attendants can quickly assess the situation and determine whether it is an emergency. They can ask the pilot if it is more unusual (like the ceiling falling). 

3. Follow Instructions

The crew will know if something is an emergency or an inconvenience. If they tell you not to worry, don’t. If they ask you to return to your seat, do so. In this situation, the crew will definitely know more than you do, so listen to what they tell you to do. 

4. If Oxygen Masks Deploy, Use Them

Like the crew’s instructions, the oxygen masks deploy for a reason. If something happens on your plane that causes them to drop, utilize them, even if it seems unnecessary. (And, of course, put yours on first before helping others.) 

5. Don’t Try to Fix Whatever Broke

          If it’s a mechanical issue with your seat (like a broken tray table or recline mechanism):

• Return seat to upright position if possible
• Avoid forcing broken components, which could cause further damage
• Ask to be re-seated if the issue affects safety or comfort

For issues with overhead bins or storage compartments:

• Don’t try to force them closed
• Allow crew to secure items properly
• Accept alternative storage solutions offered by the crew. 

Remember that modern aircraft are designed with multiple redundant systems for safety. Most mechanical issues that might occur during flight are not safety-critical, and the crew is well-prepared to handle them.

In the excitement of getting ready for your beach getaway, don’t forget to pack for the travel days that will get you there.

• Headphones: For backseat entertainment. Most direct flights to the Caribbean average around four hours, so you have plenty of time to watch a few movies.
• Collapsible water bottle: This model from Hydaway saves packing space when not in use. Depending on the island you’re visiting, you may be able to drink the tap water, too.
• Tablet: This comes in handy for work and/or reading.
• Phone and Charger: It may seem like a no-brainer, but in the rush to get out the door and to the airport on time, don’t forget your most important essential. Throw a TSA-approved powerbank in your bag to stay charged even when you’re away from an outlet.

You’ll want to bring along these four categories of footwear for your Caribbean adventures, even if you plan to spend most of your time barefoot on the beach.

• Casual slip-ons or sneakers: This pair from Rockport was great for travel days, casual dinners, and walking around town.
• Water shoes: You’ll want water shoes for water activities in the Caribbean.
• Flip-flops: For the beach and walking around resorts.
• Stylish sandals or heels: If you’re planning on going out or to fancier restaurants, bring along a pair of low heels or sandals.

What to Pack for the Caribbean: Clothing

The ideal Caribbean vacation wardrobe is beachy, breezy, and versatile. Focus on pieces that can be layered and that work for multiple activities, from the beach to after-dinner drinks.

• Shorts: Pack a few pairs of both casual shorts (jean or chinos) as well as athletic shorts for any hikes or water activities.
• Quick-dry layering tops: Bring a few pairs of a tank and/or short sleeve style for excursions.
• Lightweight sweater: I packed one lightweight sweater for travel days and to cover up when needed.
• Swimsuits and cover-up: Mandatory beachwear.
• Maxi dress or long skirt: For night’s out and dinners. For men, bring one pair of chino pants if you’re going to a resort or more formal restaurant.
• Lightweight shawl: I always travel with a neutral-covered shawl that can double as a scarf, travel blanket, or cover-up.

What to Pack for the Caribbean: Toiletries

A good toiletry kit for any trip should include the essentials—toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner, OTC medication, and any personal skincare you can’t live without. For a trip to Caribbean, here are a few more necessities you’ll want to add:

• Bug spray and anti-itch cream: Mosquitos are common in the Caribbean, with some areas at risk for Zika, so you’ll want heavy-duty spray and relief.
• Sunscreen and aloe: Always travel with a natural and reef-friendly sunscreen. In case of burns, pack aloe or aftersun cream.
• Lotion wipes: I like traveling with one pack of these to cool down during the day and for a quick refresh after a day at the beach.
• Facial hydration mist: My go-to during hot days in the sun.
• Lip balm with SPF: During the mountain summit, you’ll definitely want this handy.
• Reusable plastic storage bags: These are great for wet swimsuits, dirty laundry, extra toiletries, or to double as a dry bag for your phone.

What to Pack for the Caribbean: Gadgets

A beach trip is the prime opportunity to disconnect and unwind, but that doesn’t mean you should leave all technology behind. Think about what activities will fill your relaxation time—will you need a waterproof smartwatch for your fitness goals or an e-reader to occupy you while you lounge poolside? The top two tech items you should never travel without, however, are:

• Backup phone charger: If you’re going to take a lot of photos and videos on your phone that will drain your battery, bring a backup charger.
• Adapter: If you’re going to a non-U.S. island you may need an adapter. Check with your accommodations beforehand if you’re unsure. Travel with an adapter that also has USB ports for multi-use charging.

What to Pack for the Caribbean: Accessories

These extras become essential when it comes to packing for a sunny island trip.

• Sun hat: A brimmed hat is a good idea for sun protection.
• Collapsible tote bag: Pack a simple style that can double as a market tote, beach bag, or to hold your camera bag.
• Sunglasses: Pack a sportier and affordable pair in case something happens to them.
• Cross-body bag: For nights out or day tours.

What to Pack for the Caribbean (That I Didn’t)

Don’t make these packing mistakes! Remember to bring along:

• Books or card games: You’ll want some form of entertainment, whether it be a hard copy of the book you’re reading or playing cards for downtime at the beach.
• Snorkel gear: If you have your own snorkel gear, weigh your options of renting vs. bringing. Gear is readily available to rent, but if you want your own fins and mask and will be enjoying the water almost every day, you may want to bring your own.
• Dry bag or phone protector: You’ll definitely want this if you’re at the beach or on boats and island hopping. I used plastic baggies, but wish I had brought a dry bag.
• Travel insurance: If you’re traveling during hurricane season, purchasing travel insurance with a TCI-clause is advised.

What Not to Pack for the Caribbean

There is truly only one category you want to avoid when packing for a Caribbean vacation: warm clothes. The beauty of the Caribbean is that it’s warm year round. You won’t need warm clothing or rain gear unless you’re traveling during hurricane season. Instead, focus on lightweight layering pieces that can be easily removed and stowed away in purses and beach bags.

So, it’s clear you can’t count on the TSA to reimburse you for such losses; the agency denied more than half of the claims. Are luggage locks the answer?

The Benefits of Luggage Locks

Locking your suitcase doesn’t just make it more difficult for opportunistic baggage handlers or security officers to root through your stuff at the airport. A lock can also help hold your bag’s zippers together so they don’t work their way open while in transit, leaking socks and underwear all over the baggage carousel.

You might also want to lock your bag if you’re staying in a hostel with strangers or while traveling on a crowded bus or train. Some travelers even lock their suitcases during the day at hotels to deter theft by housekeepers.

The Limitations of Luggage Locks

Putting a lock on your suitcase isn’t a guarantee that your stuff will be safe. Do a quick search on YouTube, and you’ll find a trove of videos explaining how to open a combination lock without the code or how to break into a locked suitcase with nothing but a ballpoint pen. Nor is it difficult to slice through a soft-sided bag. Locks discourage casual thieves, who will move on to easier targets, but they’re flimsy protection against those who are truly determined to get into your bag.

That’s why you should always keep any valuables in your carry-on, not your checked luggage. As noted above, the TSA is unlikely to pay you back if something is stolen from your checked bag, and airlines typically don’t accept liability for the loss of expensive items such as jewelry, electronic equipment, or fragile souvenirs.

TSA-Approved Locks

If you do decide to secure your suitcase, choose one of the many TSA-approved locks available, such as these combination locks from Master Lock or TravelMore. You can also buy keyed luggage locks such as these from Lewis N. Clark, though it’s worth considering how likely you might be to lose track of a tiny key while traveling. You can even purchase suitcases with built-in TSA-approved locks.

The TSA has master keys that allow agents to open all TSA-approved locks if they determine that your bag needs extra screening. If you use a non-TSA lock, they’ll simply cut it off your bag. Note that not all security officers outside the U.S. have the same master keys, so even a TSA-approved lock could be cut off if you’re traveling internationally.

Alternatives to Luggage Locks

Some travelers prefer to wrap their suitcases in plastic, which makes bags harder to break into, protects their exteriors from dings, and keeps them from bursting open if a zipper fails. This bagging service is offered at select airports by companies such as Seal & Go and Secure Wrap. Though security agents will cut off the plastic if they need to inspect your luggage more closely, some wrapping services offer a complimentary rewrap post-security. One disadvantage to this method: By generating so much plastic, it’s the least environmentally friendly way to protect your bag.
